Zarlen, the Bright-Tailed Wanderer, is the Hyaloring god of explorers. He is the son of Elmal and the Wheel Witch. Because of his birth, Zarlen had a rough start with the other Hyaloring gods. Although his father Elmal insisted on taking him in, the rest of the pantheon did not accept him until he proved himself as a young man.
Ride Like the Wind[]
Some of the purely nomadic Rider clans you may meet say that their lifestyle is an expression of devotion to Zarlen. Likewise, the Rider clan known for exploring has a temple to Zarlen, perhaps the only one in the Black Eel Valley.
Your clan can find him at Zarlen's Vantage Point, a bit south of the Dog Hills.
Worship[]
You can build only a shrine to Zarlen. His blessings are:
- Pathfinder: Enhances our explorers, and helps them find their way home.
- Safe Travel: Watches over our missions so that they will not be ambushed.
The Radiant Lodestone is a treasure that allows your clan to maintain a shrine to Zarlen with fewer worshipers.
On the Circle[]
Having a worshiper of Zarlen on the circle allows you to put more magic into Exploring during Sacred Time.
All members of Zarlen's cult are male. They tend to be able explorers, with high Combat and Bargaining skills. In the noble selection screens, his worshipers are marked with the Motion rune.
Lore[]
These are some of the things your circle members may say about Zarlen:
- "Zarlen's star wanders the heavens unpredictably."
- "Zarlen rides across the entire sky, visiting each of the constellations."
- "Zarlen was born from a mixed marriage, which is why he is a wandering star."
- "When Elmal gave Osara and Zarlen their belts, he said, 'Do not let the Storm Gang take them from you.'"
- "Zarlen nearly died in the land of frost. Osara warmed his bones on the sunpath, restoring him to life."
- "Zarlen wandered for many months in the company of a talking bear. One day it bared its claws and said, 'All in all, I am still a bear.'"
- "Without the exodus, we would never have met Zarlen."
- "Almost no one builds a temple to Zarlen the Wanderer. If we did, its rarity would give us great distinction."
- "Wheels adopted fewer new gods during the exodus than us, but Zarlen the Wanderer was one of them."
- "Zarlen the Wanderer often faces slave-takers, always eluding their grasp."
- "If there were a better place to move to, Zarlen would have seen it."
Myths[]
Zarlen's myth is Zarlen's First Wander.
Lights Going Out[]
It is revealed in Lights Going Out that Zarlen was one of the gods that died during the Great Darkness. Still, your clan maintained a shrine to Zarlen for years after his death. Eventually, however, your clan ceased its maintenance and let it fall to disrepair. To the Berenethtelli tribe of Rams, of which your clan has become the center of, the goddess Redalda took up Zarlen's role as the protector of explorers. Even the Rider clan that was known for exploring and had a temple dedicated to Zarlen back in Ride Like the Wind has taken up Redalda-worship instead.
Lore[]
Your clan rings can say the following of Zarlen:
- "We maintained shrines to Ernalda’s daughter Pela Barley Mother and Elmal’s son Zarlen the Wanderer for years after their deaths, but eventually had to let them fall into disrepair."
