Wergild, or weregild, is a custom present in many cultures of Glorantha, including the Riders and Rams, that murder between clans or families can be resolved by the murderer and their kin paying compensation to those of their victim's. This is a method for everyone involved to avoid escalating feuds without anyone having their honor sullied. However, the victims are under no obligation to accept an offered wergild and may declare the murder a just cause for war or feud instead.

The customary compensation is 10 cows worth of goods (or horses, in the case of the Riders) for a commoner and 20 for an elite fighter (e.g. Swords) or noble. This is relative, however, meaning that the compensation for the murder of someone especially noteworthy, like a chieftain or a hero of renown, would be significantly higher.

To Rams, this custom was laid down by Orlanth and to Riders it goes at least as far back as the laws dictated by Hyalor.

Notes[]

Wergild is a real custom from historical tribal societies in Europe.
