Swords are not just literal weapons but the elite warriors of a Rider clan, who enjoy high status and fill their Honor Belts with gold plaques in return for risking their lives to defend or win wealth and glory for the clan. They are not the whole military of the clan, but fight as well as several Bows, or common fighters.
Since Swords die frequently in the clan's defense, you will have to recruit more of them periodically.
