The Small Suns are some of the many gods who claimed to be the Sun after Yelm's death. They are not threats to Elmal on the level of Shargash or Yonesh, but there are many of them.

They appear in Elmal Guards the Sunpath, trying to steal stones from the sunpath rather than to control or defend. Here, two of them are identified as the Eggshell Sun and the Ghost Sun. In the ritual based on that myth, Elmal Path Guardian, their role is played by the Golden Men; it is not clear if the Small Suns and the Golden Men are the same, related, or separate groups.
In the ritual Hyalor Tablet Maker, the Emperor Manarlavus threatens to curse Elmal's name and reduce him to the status of Small Sun, so that he will dwindle to nothing and be forgotten. Hyalor and Samnal, who are usually rivals, band together to defy the Emperor and assert that Elmal will never be forgotten.
