Three elders of different families sit in judgement on a legal case.

Hyaloring clans greatly respect their elders. Each family is led by an elder, and the family head is advised by the other old men and women of their lineage. Most legal disputes within a clan are judged by a council of three elders from families not involved in the matter. The myth of Relandar's Ranking explains the origins of this system, and specifies that elders deserve respect whether they are male or female, noble or commoner. Adoptees can also become elders.

While Orlanthi elders are not as powerful in terms of legal arbitration as their Hyaloring counterparts, having to share authority with not just a clan council but often a tribal king as well, Orlanthi families still hold great respect for their elders.
