Dialogue[]

A diverse <host/horde> of Chaos <monsters/creatures> <appears/gathers/masses>, <apparently/seemingly> drawn to Berenstead. <At first we thought it was <Forosilvuli raiders/the <Other> clan>, but then we realized <it/they> were shapestealers/<The majority/Most> are <broos/cannibals/ogres/scorpion men/walktapi>, <along with/though there are> <also> <some/a fair number of/a few> <broos/scorpion folk> and <broos/humans/scorpion folk>. <Luckily, our patrols spotted them/We were on the alert after the visit from Wakboth worshippers>, <so all <Number> Swords and <Number> of our Bows are available to fight them./<Even though we were on alert after the visit from the devil worshippers, they somehow eluded/They managed to <evade/elude/avoid>> our patrols, and we have only <number> Swords and <Number> of our Bows available to fight them.> It was hard to be certain but <Noble> thought we were <slightly/definitely/certainly> outnumbered.
  1. Hunker down in Berenstead.
  2. Use spirits to fight them off.
  3. Rely on Elmal the Defender.
  4. Rely on Humakt, God of Death.
  5. Rely on Osara, the Flame Sister.
  6. Rely on Urox, the Chaos Fighter.

Six Ages 2: Lights Going Out

Consequences[]

If you use spirits to fight them off, choose a shaman to lead the defense, then how much magic you choose to expend, then how to focus the defense:

  1. Summon Oakfed, the great wildfire spirit.
  2. Summon beast spirits.
  3. Summon wind spirits.
  4. Summon whatever spirits are closer.
  5. Release the Iron spirit.
  6. Release the Scouring Wind spirit.

Your chosen spirits may help with the battle. A released spirit may be expended. Oakfed, if controlled, may fully eliminate the Chaos horde without casualties. If not properly controlled, Oakfed may still destroy the Chaos horde, but set fire to Berenstead's buildings in the process (a venture will be required to repair them); your pastures may also be temporarily damaged. Otherwise, casualties are likely. <Noble> may find the goat-like broos herdable. Clan Magic and Mood may possibly increase.

If you choose to rely on Elmal, you will likely be assigned an Elmali warrior to lead the defense. You're given the choice whether to bolster the defense with any spare Magic you might have. Finally, you're given these follow-up options:

  1. Embody Elmal.
  2. Fight aggressively.
  3. Fight defensively.
  4. Emphasize the use of Elmal's magic.
(A shrine/temple/great temple to Elmal will help here)

If your hero successfully embodies Elmal, they will likely turn the Chaos horde back with minimal casualites, but the hero themselves may be injured.

If you successfully fight defensively, with Elmal's favor, you may hold off the horde to relatively few casualties. You may receive a bonus if Beren fought defensively at the Battle of Stormfall.

If you choose to rely on Humakt then you will first have to choose a Humakt devotee to lead the defense and how much magic to spend. Finally, you will be asked how the leader chooses to fight:

  1. Kill as many <majority attackers> as possible.
  2. Take charge of the Swords in battle.
  3. Lead our army.

Success will let your noble cut down a great number of Chaos monsters, who will turn tail and run. The battle will be won with minimal casualties and clan mood will improve.

Alternatively, a new enemy may emerge from the Chaos army: a scorpion queen. You may choose how the champion chooses to attack it:

  1. Cut at her legs.
  2. Impale the thorax.
  3. Lop off the stinger.
  4. Strike everywhere and anywhere.'
  5. Strike boldly at her head.

Success here will have the champion slay the scorpion queen, demoralizing and disorienting the Chaos monsters, who will be driven back with minimal casualties. One of your nobles may distinguish themselves in the battle. The winning champion may become an even more effective fighter against Chaos in the future.

Regardless of the way you fight, failure will usually (always?) result in the Chaos host being driven off, albeit with heavy casualties on your side. In addition, clan mood will drop and the Chaos creatures will cause some additional damage before they leave - for example, degrading your farming, foraging or hunting output for a while.

Notes[]

Unlike regular raids, the clan ring has advice on the matter and operates on different rules.

There is different artwork for different Chaos raids. If the main host is composed of shapestealers, the raiding image of whichever group they impersonate will be used.

Advice[]

At start:

  • "Grandfather may have perished at the <False Kings Massacre/Battle of Screamhorn Vale/Blood Feast Battle/Writhestone Disaster/Battle of the Stingers>, but I will avenge him today." - Iverlantho, if the majority attackers are the creatures who killed King Vinglanth
  • "We are not lucky that Chaos attacks, but we are fortunate to have a number of good choices." - Venef
  • "I think I can take care of them." - Dresta
  • "The spirits will help, but we have no sworn spirits that are particularly suited to fighting Chaos." - Dresta, alternate
  • "Chaos is becoming more organized, taking advantage of the strengths of different types of monsters." - Reda
  • "Have we considered hailing them?" - Serestev
  • "Our most distant ancestors worshiped the bright sun." - Ancestors worshiper
  • "Beren used magic to destroy many Chaos horrors at the Battle of Stormfall." - depending on choices during clan creation
  • "Beren fought defensively at the Battle of Stormfall." - depending on choices during clan creation
  • "Knowing the foe would cheat, at the Battle of Stormfall, Beren used clever tactics." - depending on choices during clan creation
  • "It won't be easy, but I am willing to take the lead." - Shaman
  • "In my youth, we didn't need to learn how to fight Chaos. But now I am more than ready."
  • "If you cut a walktapus in two, an hour later you will have two walktapi. So we must attack them the right way." - if most of the Chaos attackers are walktapi
  • "Didn't Vinglanth fight like Beren when the <Chaos creature>s killed him and took the cursed regalia?"
  • "Beren may have fought bravely and well at the Battle of Stormfall, but we still lost."
  • "After <Chaos creatures> slew King Vinglanth, our ancestors found magic to fight them. But that alone won't carry the day."
  • "Beren made the best choice possible. <Humakt will guide us.>"
  • "It won't be an easy battle, but I'm willing to take the lead."
  • "<Even though we spotted the raid,> we didn't have time to gather everyone and their livestock into the fort. Sheltering in Berenstead risks the <majority attackers> hunting them down."
  • "<The/Our> people <must> trust <Noble> to lead the defense." - note: the noble seems to be selected for both their Combat/Magic/Leadership skills and their popularity among your people
  • "We have few warriors, so it will be hard to defend the walls. It would also be hard to fight them outside."
  • "Normally I wouldn't suggest holing up in the fort, but we have fewer fighters than I would like."
  • "We must take the attack to them."
  • "When you are surrounded, it doesn't matter where you aim your arrows."
  • "Fighting Chaos is not the same as fighting human foes on the battlefield."
  • "Perhaps if we remain in the fort, they won't attack."
  • "So we can rely on our walls, fight magically, or with sharp bronze."
  • "I have nothing to add."

Advice for spirits:

  • "Most shamans can't control Oakfed. I may not be able to keep it from doing some harm to us. <Scouring Wind fights Chaos.> <Iron defends against Chaos, which we are trying to do today.>" - Dresta
  • "Wind spirits still live in our otherwise useless shrine to Orlanth." - if you have an Orlanth shrine
  • "The hunting and foraging rituals we performed last Sacred Time attracted many beast spirits." - depending on how you spent your magic last Sacred Time

Advice for Elmal:

  • "Elmal fought the Teller of Lies, and though he was greviously wounded, was never killed. I can channel Elmal's power."
  • "Although there are many stories of Elmal the Defender, his fire magic can help win an attack."

Advice for Humakt:

  • "By killing enough <majority attacker>, it might be possible to tamp down the effects of Chaos more broadly. <Noble> can lead our forces while I do this." - Kerenna
  • "I am her death." - Kerenna, when facing the scorpion queen
