The Berenethtelli are a Ram tribe located in the Black Eel Valley. It was founded by Beren and Redalda and the hereditary king of the tribe is their descendant. The king and the royal clan is situated in the dwarf-built fortress of Berenstead. The Berenethtelli distinguish themselves from other Vingkotling tribes by being the only one that knows how to ride horses. All of the Kestaytelli clans and all the Rams in the valley, sans the Deleskarings, joined Beren's tribal kingdom. The legends and history of the events leading up to the founding of the tribe is told in the myth How Horses Came to Orlanthstead.

Location[]

CrudeMap

A crudely drawn map of the Berenethtelli lands, with special prominence given to Berenstead.

The Berenethtelli's tribal lands lie in the southwest of the Black Eel valley: south and west of the Oslira river; on both banks of the Forantin river; east of the Autumn Mountains and the lands of the Penentelli; and north of the lands of the Vestantes and Forosilvuli.

Clans[]

At the start of Lights Going Out, in Iverlantho 4, there are always eight Berenethtelli clans, including the royal clan of Berenstead.

While the clans have mostly acquired different reputations since the Storm Age, most of them are still the same clans. That is, "the first clan to join Beren's fight" is always the same clan that was once known for throwing javelins in combat, and they will still use javelins as missiles.

Potential names for the non-royal clans include: Andayling, Barmerning, Erthaling, Genadari, Hulmafing, Irnathi, Jernelthi, Kastwalting, Kestangi, Lastraling, Orlmarthing, Ornolsting, Orvisi, Porganosi, Soranding, Tharaling, Urkarning, Varleving, Walakering, and Zethmaring.

The "being the first clan to join Beren's fight" clan[]

This clan was known for hurling javelins in combat back in the Storm Age, and they still use javelins for missiles during the Chaos Age.

Back when Beren started to unite the tribe, this clan was the first to join him in his fight and recognize him as their king. They helped to convince other clans in the valley, often through force, that a man that was born a Rider could become an Orlanthi king. Their ancestors made up an elite force called the Berenguard, which struck the enemies of Beren's when called upon.

Events[]

Lore[]

Ring-members of the royal clan may say the following about them:

  • "The <First To Join Beren Clan>s are known for being the first clan to join Beren's fight."
  • "Our archers can shoot further than they can hurl their javelins."
  • "The javelin may not fly as far as an arrow, but it flies as true."
  • "Like the weapons of the <First To Join Beren Clan>s, the songs of the Berenguard are sharply pointed."
  • "Attacks on bandits lack ritual equivalence to the Berenguard's exploits."
  • "We need them with us when we revive the tribe."

The "eating rock when hunger strikes" clan[]

This clan was known for its black-fleeced sheep back in the Storm Age.

After the Great Darkness—when the tribe broke and food became all the more scarce—this clan's earth priestesses was given a gift from the, now dead, Ernalda: the ability to alter pebbles and gravel to provide true, if meager, nutrition.

Events[]

Lore[]

Ring-members of the royal clan may say the following about them:

  • "Real food is always better, but their magic is genuine."
  • "They discovered this magic after the fading of the tribe."
  • "Ernalda sent them a gift from their slumber seed."

The "giving up on kings when Vinglanth died" clan[]

This clan was known for its white-fleeced sheep back in the Storm Age.

When Chaos beasts slew King Vinglanth, this clan was the first to break from the tribe. When Vinglanth's son and successor, King Brolarulf, ordered the clans to strenghten their solar devotions, this clan ignored his commands. From the on, they schemed against the king and, as the tribe became all the more disunited, they took pride in how they were the first to break from it.

Events[]

Lore[]

Ring-members of the royal clan may say the following about them:

  • "They connived incessantly against [Brolarulf]."
  • "When they turned on [Brolarulf], he had to work all the harder to prove himself."
  • "It's hard to say whether renewed solar worship was the cause of resistance to Brolarulf, or the pretext."

The "worshiping Valind Winter-King" clan[]

This clan was known for its powers of thunder during the Storm Age.

Maybe because they earned this power from Orlanth himself, they were especially vulnerable when he died at the start of the Great Darkness. As a means to protect themselves, they decided to start worshiping Orlanth's outlaw nephew—Valind, the god of ice and chill winds. As a result, they started to consort with ice demons.

Events[]

Lore[]

Ring-members of the royal clan may say the following about them:

  • "After Orlanth's death they protected themselves by worshiping his outlaw nephew Valind, god of the glacier winds."
  • "The <Worshiping Valind Clan> clan is what happens when the head of your pantheon dies."
  • "They are not to be confused with the <Harboring Outlaws Clan> who also worship Valind but do so by harboring bandits."

The "harboring outlaws" clan[]

This clan was known for throwing axes back in the Storm Age, and they still use axes as missiles during the Chaos Age.

In desperation, when Orlanth died, this clan started to worship Valind—the god of bandits and ice—much like the clan that consorts with ice demons. However, this clan did so by harboring bandits instead, in exchange for part of their takings. This gave heart to bandits throughout the valley.

Events[]

Lore[]

Ring-members of the royal clan may say the following about them:

  • "[The <Worshiping Valind Clan> is] not to be confused with the <Harboring Outlaws Clan> who also worship Valind but do so by harboring bandits."
  • "Sheltering bandits? The <Harboring Outlaws Clan>s never would have done it before <Giving Up On Kings Clan>s broke our tribe."
  • "<Harboring Outlaws Clan> actions give heart to bandits throughout the valley."
  • "We must understand what desperation would drive the <Harboring Outlaws Clan>s into the arms of bandits."
  • "Our archers can shoot further than they can throw their axes."

The "still growing acceptable barley" clan[]

This clan was known for its wealth back in the Storm Age.

When Beren and Redalda made the tribe, they introduced some of the solar gods—Elmal, most notably—to the Rams. Of them, this clan adopted the worship of Pela, the barley goddess. When Pela died, about the same time as Ernalda did, this clan preserved her secrets in a way that others didn't, allowing them to still grow acceptable barley when that of others turned out sickly.

Gameplay-wise, this clan produces more food than other Berenethtelli clans.

Lore[]

Ring-members of the royal clan may say the following about them:

  • "Most of us produce sickly barley these days, but the <Acceptable Barley Clan> preserve the secrets of its patron goddess, Pela."

The "maintaining the Healthy Cow Secret" clan[]

This clan was known for its many cows back in the Storm Age.

During the Chaos Age, where most cows are skinny or gristly, this clan is known for being the last to keep healthy ones.

Lore[]

Ring-members of the royal clan may say the following about them:

  • "Cows today are skinny and gristly compared to days of old—except for those of the <Healthy Cows Clan>."

The "keeping slaves" clan[]

This clan did not exist back in the Storm Age, but is known for keeping slaves—something that Beren prohibited—during the Chaos Age.

The "strong magic" clan[]

This clan has been known for its strong magic since back in the Storm Age, and maintain that reputation into the Chaos Age.

Culture and Religion[]

Gods[]

Redalda brought many of her people's gods to Beren's Rider clan when they wed and—as time passed and their tribe expanded to include more Ram clans—the Berenethtelli became all the more Orlanthi in their worship. Most notably, in order to properly found the Berenethtelli tribal kingdom, they were forced to forever give up worship of Hyalor, whose laws dissuaded kingship. This, presumably, included any potential veneration of Hyalor's half-elf daughter, Cenala, since her worship was also abandoned before the Chaos Age no matter what stance Beren's clan took in relation to her cult. However, many Rider gods still remained within the tribe, especially amongst those belonging to the royal clan.

SmallShrine

A small wayside shrine found in Berenethtelli lands.

The Berenethtelli style of worship would change further, as gods died during the times leading up to the Great Darkness. This change included a greater emphasis on the veneration of the tribe's ancestors.

By the time of Iverlantho, the major gods of the Berenethtelli clans were:

  • Rune Man Ancestors: Rider ancestors, who migrated from the Golden City.
  • Rune Harmony Chalana Arroy: Pacifistic goddess of Health and Healing.
  • Rune Beast Dostal: God of hunting, and husband of Inilla.
  • OrlanthSacrificeNoResponse

Berenethtelli in Brolarulf's time sacrifice to Orlanth, to no response.

Rune Fire Elmal: Bright god of war, ruling in Orlanth's absence.
  • Rune Earth Ernalda: The great Earth Mother, who provided food and clothing.
  • Rune Illusion Eurmal: Trickster, who discovered Death.
  • Rune Death Humakt: God of War and Death, and of all Endings.
  • Rune Wilds Inilla: Goddess of Foraging, and wife of Dostal.
  • Rune Communication Issaries: God of Trade, Communication, and Conciliation.
  • Rune Truth Lhankor Mhy: God of Knowledge and Law.
  • Rune Wind Orlanth: King of the Storm Tribe, patron of the Berenethtelli.
  • Rune Osara Osara: Flame Sister, Elmal's daughter, and patron of warrior women.
  • Rune Horse Redalda: Horse goddess, who brought Ram and Rider together.
  • Rune Cow Uralda: The Cow Mother, daughter of Ernalda, source of Berenethtelli cattle.
  • Rune Urox Urox: The Storm Bull, Chaos foe.
  • Rune Ram Voriof: God of Shepherds, son of Orlanth and Ernalda.

It is notable that Ram only clans of the Berenethtelli do not worship Elmal, but others do. The royal clan in particular hold him in high regard, as he is the patron god of the Berenethtelli kings. In return, Elmal favors the royal clan with a special blessing every ten years, provided he finds their deeds the last decade worthy.

Similarly to how some Berenethtelli clans do not worship Elmal, some clans worship Orlanth's daughter, Vinga, instead of Osara, Elmal's daughter, as their goddess of female warriors. Osara became more prominent as Vinga diminished after the death of her father, however.

BerenethtelliShamans

Berenethtelli shamans beseech spirits.

The Berenethtelli's preference for Dostal over the traditional Ram hunting god of Odayla sometimes bring them in conflict with others, like the Deskelarings and the people of Bearwoods.

Zarlen and Gamari were venerated in the distant past—the royal clan, at least, even maintained a shrine to Zarlen for years after his death during the Great Darkness—but their roles were eventually superseded by Redalda.

Some gods, like Yinkin, are not actively worshiped through the construction of shrines or temples, but are called upon and sacrificed to when the need arises.

If Beren's clan worshiped Buseryan as Riders, then it would continue to do so as Berenethtelli Rams, at least up to about the time of the Great Darkness, when stars were no longer normally visible from the earth. Similarly, if already venerated, Venurtera-worship would be maintained past the clan's transition into becoming Orlanthi. However, her worship would end when she died around the same time as Issaries and Lhankor Mhy.

The goddess Pela Barley Mother was a Rider goddess incorporated into the Berenethtelli pantheon, as a daughter of Ernalda's. However, Pela died around the same time as Ernalda did. Though at least the royal clan maintained a shrine to Pela for years following her death, these efforts eventually ceased and Pela-worship was abandoned.

While Raven-worship would fall out in favor of Eurmal's, shamanism remain a common and accepted alternative to god-worship. As more and more gods died during the Great Darkness and the Chaos Age, the tribe was forced to rely more on spirits than ever before.

Culture[]

The Berenethtelli is an amalgamation of Rider and Ram cultures. This cultural union, formed out of Beren's and Redalda's wedding, allowed Kestaytelli Rams to learn how to ride horses and Beren's Rider clan to form a kingdom.

IMG 0971

Redalda introduces an alynx to Beren.

Besides Rams adopting the practice of horse-riding or Riders ruling a kingdom, the most influential cultural innovation of this union was the law code formed by its founders, Beren and Redalda. It was a fusion of Rider laws, established by Hyalor, and Ram laws, put in place by Vingkot. They harmonized the two law codes where appropriate, like the usage of compensation for the righting of wrongs, and did away with others, like Hyalor's prohibition of kings. The Berenethtelli kings were placed above the chiefs of individual clans, who were required, and had the right, to solve disputes between clans through arbitration by the king, instead of declaring feuds or relying on mediation by third-partes. In accordance with Vingkot's law, the kingship was passed from father to son.

Ultimately, however, the Berenethtelli tribe is more Ram than Rider in nature and, over time, Beren's royal clan would adopt much of Ram culture. For instance, they gave up their goats for the shepherding of sheep, started to keep the occasional alynx, replaced the drinking of kumis with beer or wine, and kite-flying games came to supersede the traditional archery contests that Riders favored. In terms of fashion, they too became more Ram-like, as Beren's clan ceased to wear their Rider honor belts, instead choosing to dress more like other Ram peoples and tattoo themselves in the typical Orlanthi fashion.

IMG 0967

With the merging of Beren's and Redalda's clans, there would be a lot more than the original seven families of Beren's Rider clan, de-emphasizing the importance of family ties when it came to balancing the interests of its circle. However, this division would still persist, most notably as different factions of solar and storm devotees in the politics of the royal clan, the former largely consisting of the original Rider families and the latter mostly of Ram families that were later adopted into the clan. The clan circle also came to be referred to as the clan ring, in accordance with Orlanthi customs.

This is not to say that Rider ways did not influence the wider Berenethtelli culture at all. For example, instead of the beardless mustaches most Vingkotling men favor, men from all Berenethtelli clans prefer the full beards in the typical Rider-style, same as Beren's. Also, other Berenethtelli clans adopted the custom of cremating their dead men instead of burying them, an example set by Beren's funeral pyre. Their women were still returned to the earth, though, which is not the case for the royal clan, whose funeral rites date back to their Rider days. However, unlike Riders, Berenethtelli clans, royal or otherwise, do not place the ashes inside funeral dolls.

Kings[]

Berenethtelli kings are traditionally crowned using the tribal regalia, now lost. Without it, the authority of the kings following Vinglanth is limited.

1. Beren[]

WeddingSuccess

Wedding of Beren and Redalda, with both Rams and Riders in attendance.

The Rider Beren the Tall, descendant of Elmal, would become the first king of the Berenethtelli tribe and Redalda, daughter of Vingkot, its first queen. Together, the two presided over the tribe's founding and consolidation. Through their union they wedded not just their bloodlines, but also their cultures. Beren gave Redalda's people the secret to horse-riding and, in return, Redalda gave the magic of kingship. Redalda demonstrated her mastery of the horse by riding one on her and Beren's wedding day, though no one had taught her.

Redalda also brought with her gods of the Storm panthon to Beren's clan: Orlanth would join Elmal as one of the Berenethtelli's main deities, Nyalda would be worshiped under the Orlanthi name of Ernalda, and Erissa gave way to Chalana Arroy, among others. In time, the people of Beren's clan began to act more Ram-like, from how they dressed to what they drank or ate. Beren even went so far as to slaughter all of his clan's goats so that they could start keeping sheep instead. However, in order for Beren's Rider ancestors to accept the merger of their peoples, Redalda had to promise to forever uphold one Rider virtue.

BerenInOtherworld

King Beren at the height of his power, as seen in the Otherworld.

In order to unite the Rams of the Black Eel Valley, and to prepare for a Chaos-ridden future, Redalda aided Beren in his unification of her people. First, she brought many of her kin to Beren's clan, first through marriage and then through full merger. Finally, she helped to bring the other Ram clans of the valley into their fold, both through martial might and through clever alliances. Members of one Ram clan would even lead the Berenguard and their javelins would aid in convincing recalcitrant Ram chieftains that a son of Elmal could be their king. However, the followers of Deleskar would never join the Berenethtelli clan, as he harbored ambitions of becoming a god himself.

As Hyalor's law forbade the rulership of kings, Beren's clan melted down Hyalor's golden tablet into a royal crown. This crown would become one piece of the Berenethtelli's royal regalia, along with the Horn of Vingkot and the Mantle of Redalda. Instead of Hyalor's law, Beren would found a new law code, one that harmonized the traditions of Hyalor and Vingkot. According to his Rider traditions, Beren forbade slavery.

Dwarves constructing Berenstead

Captured dwarves constructing Berenstead.

By the time of Beren's crowning—attended by all the Ram and many Rider chieftains—dwarven sailors captured by him and Redalda had already started the construction of Berenstead. The fortress would serve as a place of power and protection for the royal clan henceforth. With Berenstead's establishment, the story tent of Beren's Rider clan became a royal tapestry hung behind his throne.

Beren and Redalda at Stormfall

Beren and Redalda at the battle of Stormfall.

When Chaos—in the forms of Wakboth and his Unholy Trio—finally came, Beren answered Orlanth's call and joined the other tribal kings at Stormfall Battle. Though Beren fought better than the other kings, the battle was still a loss for the Storm gods and a great Chaos victory. The royal clan survived the subsequent destruction of the Spike and the resulting blanketing of the sky—heralding the onset of the Great Darkness—by taking refuge inside Berenstead. Following these events, Beren's clan found that it could no longer keep its Yarm tree alive. Neither could the remaining Rider clans of the valley.

Later, Beren was the only Orlanthi king, being the only one of both sun and storm, who could aid Orlanth in his battle against the Chaos god Tyram when the latter invaded the sky.

Other great Berenethtelli figures of this time were Broadback, keeper of the stores of Berenstead; Double Blood, carver of Berenstead's story wall; and Manyfoot, Beren's senior emissary.

Both Beren and Redalda lived many mortal lifetimes. In the end, Redalda picked up many of the roles of forgotten gods—horses, riding, and preservation—and became a god herself. Finally, Beren allowed himself to die and Redalda showed her priestesses how they should pray to her. Beren's body was burned on a funeral pyre, starting the funeral traditions for future Berenethtelli kings. The spirits of him and Redalda then rode to Orlanthstead.

BerenEmblems

Beren's emblems used for augery.

Before she departed, Redalda released her "daughters", a herd of golden, singing mares to aid her descendants in times of need.

After his death, the plaques of Beren's honor belt would be kept as royal emblems and be used in ceremonies of augery.

2. Ulvargar[]

See also: Ulvargar

Due to their supernaturally long lives, by the time of their passing, Beren's and Redalda's oldest sons were already old and frail. Therefore, it fell to their youngest and strongest son, Ulvargar, to take his father's place as the second king of the Berenethtelli. Unusually, he initiated to both Elmal, the traditional patron of Berenethtelli kings, and Urox the Storm Bull. Thus, he declared himself to be the Chaos-Fighting King.

In his time, he would maintain strong ties to the Uroxi, roving war bands of Chaos fighters. Under his rule, the tribe grew and he spread the worship of Elmal to other Berenethtelli clans.

Like Beren, he too died of old age.

3. Vingulf[]

See also: Vingulf

After Ulvargar, his son, Vingulf, became the third Berenethtelli king. In his time, the Berenethtelli was beset by Chaos and the first Berenethtelli clan would disband, falling prey to the temptations of Chaos. The other clans would remain, however, out of fear of Wakboth.

Besides his son by blood, Vinglanth, he would also adopt Koralant as his son. Vingulf would become known as the Last Wise King.

4. Vinglanth[]

VinglanthDemise

Vinglanth's demise, as depicted on the walls of Berenstead.

Though many tribesmen desired Vinglanth's adopted brother Koralant to ascend to the kingship, Vingkot's law forbid this. Thus, Vinglanth became the fourth Berenethtelli king.

When Vinglanth rode to battle against Chaos, Koralant advised him not to take the royal regalia with him. Vinglanth, however, rebuffed his brother. As a result, Vinglanth would not just lose his life, that of his eldest son, Helethar, but also the royal regalia to Chaos. Thus, Vinglath would be the last Berenethtelli king to be properly crowned.

5. Brolarulf[]

See also: Brolarulf

Vinglanth's remaining son, Brolarulf, became the fifth Berenethtelli king.

Brolarulf appealed to tradition and led a revival of solar worship among the Berenethtelli. He even approached Wheel clans to do so. This alienated him to the Ram only clans in the tribe, who had never worshiped Elmal. Brolarulf would oversee the slow dissolution of the tribe, individual clans increasingly making decisions for themselves, fighting Chaos and each other as they saw fit.

BrolarulfGreatRaid

Brolarulf leading his Great Raid.

He would try to unite the valley under himself by conducting a Great Raid against one of his reticent neighbors. Though he won a great victory, he never achieved the unity he dreamt of.

In the later years of his reign, he had to face the slow death of many Storm gods. First Orlanth and Ernalda and then Issaries and Lhankor Mhy. It was his decision as to whether to continue to worship these dead gods or not. As the gods began to wither and die, the veneration of ancestors and spirits became all the more important.

Brolarulf and his advisors would eventually die of either the Blue Plague or the Blood Blizzard. The royal clan retreated back to Berenstead, surrounded by other Berenethtelli clans.

6. Iverlantho[]

BirthOfVenef

Iverlantho presents his son, Venef, to the royal clan.

By the time that Brolarulf's son, Iverlantho, became the sixth Berenethtelli king, the position had become mostly ceremonial, with even the royal clan split as to whether to maintain the kingdom or not. Iverlantho, however, desired a true kingship over all the Berenethtelli clans.

Early in his life, he had been wed twice and lost all his sons to Chaos. He saw it as one of his royal duties to remarry and father new children to continue Beren's and Redalda's royal line. Eventually, he wed a third wife, a Berenethtelli maiden many years his junior, with which he fathered his final son and heir, Venef. This would be his ultimate legacy, as he never achieved his ambition of reinstituting royal authority amongst the Berenethtelli before his death.

In Battle[]

In Lights Going Out, when fighting as the royal clan of the Berenethtelli, you receive a bonus when fighting the way that Beren did in the Battle of Stormfall, chosen during clan creation. For example, if Beren fought cautiously at Stormfall, then you will receive a bonus when you choose to "Fight cuatiously" during the melee phase of battle.

Similarly, you will receive a bonus when fighting the enemy that Brolarulf attacked during his Great Raid, as chosen during the prologue.

Finally, the magic of your ancestors will aid you when fighting the Chaos foe that slew King Vinglanth.

Lights Going Out[]

You play as the royal clan of the Berenethtelli in Lights Going Out. The prologue covers the reign of King Brolarulf and the main game starts in the fifth year of Iverlantho.
